Batman
09-21/28-1967 "The Wail of the Siren"

Joan Collins as the glorious "Lorelei Circe, The Siren..."

Springing deep from the male mythical subconscious, The Siren is WOman at her most alluring and ultimately fatal: able to hypnotize men to do her bidding with her stunning voice, she turns them into adoring puppets who are subject to her will and whim, so powerful she can  command men  not only to serve, but die for her...

She first appears (inexplicably) helping the Riddler...

We learn she can stun / hypnotize men with her voice, but not WOmen, setting her up as a Sexist Dominatrix...

"It's never failed to put men under my spell, and at my command..."

She miraculously appears at Commissioner Gordon's office...

And proceeds to hypnotize the aging official...

He hasn't had it this good in awhile...

"Now Commissioner, you are ready to do my bidding..."

"No man can resist the stunning note of my voice..."

She sends him into the trunk of the Batmobile, where he is happy to serve her...

In her grotto...

"I want to be evil!"

"I want to become the wickedest woman in the world!"

"I'll be unstoppable..."

She phones Bruce Wayne, blasting him with her sonic voice...

And induces him to surrender all his material wealth to her...

Stunning Chief O'Hara...

And telling him to go jump in Gotham Park Lake, which he immediately does...

"Well, look who's here... batboy!"

She orders Batgirl & Robin off the premises, informing them she owns the Wayne building...

Bruce confirms: "She now owns this building..."

She then announces Bruce will be jumping off the building...

"Bruce Wayne? That penniless fop?"

"He's going to leap off the roof..."

Bruce readily agrees: "I'm going to leap off the roof..."

She strokes his face, cooing... "Good boy..."

"Come on now, just one more step...".

Thanks to Starman* for the large vidcaps...

The character name is derived from 3 archetypical feminine entities: Sirens in Greek mythology are sea nymphs who entice sailors to destruction by the charm of their singing.  Lorelei ("rock elf" in German), is the Germanic version of a Siren,  a beautiful maiden whose song lures boatmen to their doom.  Circe, also from Greek mythology, was a powerful sorceress who could turn men into swine... This role is a variation on  Marsha, Queen of Diamonds in that a Beautiful WOman possesses an unnatural ability to control men to forfeit their wealth to her... Both characters also were adorned in thigh-high silver mini-skirts designed to drive the male eye to maddening distraction... The costuming, of course, is what reinforces her ability to "stun" men.  While she possesses an absurd, unbelievable  power with her voice to hypnotize, the sheer eroticism of her costume is the actual physical representation of her ability to control men.  Few males of the species can regard a mini cut that high at the thigh and not be transfixed.  Combined with Joan Collins' innate ability to sound commanding with her delicious voice, the absurdity of her "weapon" actually becomes believable.

Some observations by "High C"... "The Siren was the only villain that had super-powers and never confronted Batman... Interestingly, for someone who is pretty much a one-shot villainess, she has her own instrumental theme... Collins' performance was excellent... She was all business and never went over the top, except maybe in the scene where she was pleading for her life while hanging from the ledge. She did not play this absurd character, based on a mythological being, for laughs. She made her evil, seductive, dominating, and desirable. And Joan’s crisp British accent only adds to the character’s villainy...

As for her look, Collins as the Siren is exotic. Long braided wig, stretching back. Silver lame, first a one-shoulder tunic, then another sleeveless gown, both showing plenty of leg. Silver earrings. Silver eye shadow. A silver bracelet on her left upper arm. Sandals, and then silver boots. Her main outfit is easily the skimpiest costume worn by a villainess as an "everyday" outfit.

Note the difference in Bruce’s and Gordon’s reactions to being under her spell. Bruce is pretty much a zombie, while the Commish seems to be in lotus-land, enjoying himself immensely."
