The Avengers

With the Heroines dominating the action and Steed (curiously) not a ladies man, opportunities for fetching and / or evil Femmes were slight over the course of the long run... But those who were tended to display that certain British nastiness that proves quite commanding for a Lady...

"Stay Tuned"

Most Americans experienced AvengerFemmes out of order, first knowing Emma Peel, then Tara King, and then many years later discovering Catherine Gale (and then realizing: "Hey, it's Pussy Galore!")... As the Honor Blackman as Catherine Gale-era episodes were shot in B&W live video they lack the mesmerizing gloss or sophistication of the Emma Peel-era, nor the sumptuousness of Pussy Galore in Goldfinger... The promo pictures certainly display an intent of Powerful Female Dominance but most of the eps don't fulfill the promise... They do indicate, tho, where the series was going: A Female SuperHeroine, independent, clever, resourceful and physically superior to all men who try to get in her way...

Press the green play button for Catherine Gale in action...

Diana Rigg as Emma Peel, of course, fulfilled the promise, incarnating as the greatest of all SuperHeroines...

So lithe & slinky, almost dainty, yet so cat-like quick, consistently surprising all males with her agility and fighting prowess... And while the Femme-Fu violence can be compelling, what ultimately overwhelms the viewer is Emma's utter dominance over the men she is subduing... Most of the fights do have a give 'n' take - Emma gets in the first shot, the male realizes she's not fooling around, comes back at her, but she fends him off and wins, always always wins in the end...

And rather than the routine inevitability of her victory growing tiresome over time, each viewing of an Emma Peel fight becomes more arousing because you do know she's going to win, that  she is truly unbeatable... And like her male adversaries,  you want Emma, you love Emma, but you know you can't have her, because she doesn't want you, she's doesn't want any man - all she wants to do is beat men up, rejecting their desire and their strength, proving her FEmale Superiority as she wears some of the hottest costumes in the history of FemmeFetish Fashion...

And Linda Thorson had the impossible task of following Rigg...

Tara King was sweet, she was pretty...

But she also was a bit of Bimbo and even though she posed tough and mixed it up with guys, she was not at all the type of Powerful Femme one has come to expect from the series...

It was kinda fun, tho, watching Tara try...
