1963: The Man from the Diner's Club
CARA WILLIAMS

This
is one of those "time-capsules" where the further way from the time period
the more bizarre the movie seems... Danny Kaye was on his last legs as a movie
star, the world was clearly changed and this was his last-ditch effort to be
relevant... In 1963 charge cards were a relatively new concept, but even more
obscure was the concept of "physical fitness..." Cara Williams' "Sugar" is doing
a standard gangster's moll routine, but in the confines of a health club, and
when she's not working out the muscles, she pounding back the booze and lighting
up a storm of cigs... Maybe it's supposed to be funny, but it doesn't seem like
its being played for laughs... But just about everything in the flick falls
flat, except Cara's derriere...
