1960: The World of Suzie Wong

NANCY KWAN

Sultry Suzie Wong...

Sits down with a lonely drunk...

After playfully teasing him...

She drives him to distraction...
Dancing with a limber sailor boy...

Posing for the artist William Holden...

Waiting to see if Suzie's skirt is going to hike up any higher distracts from rationally questioning: William Holden? A Painter? This movie made the cheong-sum a legitimate fashion statement for the Western World, and opened the Westen male's eyes to how sexy an AsianFemme can be... What makes this somewhat unusual, is that psycho-sexual media paradigm shifts usually occur first in comedies, musicals or action movies, while this instance is a tamer soap-drama... But before the movie sinks in the suds, the intro to Suzie floats at a level few movies ever have introducing the allure of a leading character... In the post-PC world it's common for Asian Actresses to put-down the "Suzie Wong" stereotype, which is a bit of back-hand slap at Nancy Kwan, who does a fine acting job, convincingly portraying the plight of the character in addition to being Honk Kong Hot...
