1961_01-06: The Marriage-Go-Round

JULIE NEWMAR

as "Katrin"

From the 1959 stage version...

The kind of House Guest that can bring your whole world down around your feet...

After dancing all about the befuddled dowdy professor, she offers from her cleavage a perfumed handkerchief...
"The perfume is a weakening agent..."
"It is now deep in your subconscious..."

He questions: "You actually think you're irresistible, don't you?"
She replies: "Do you actually think I'm not?"

Stunning in a bathing suit, she later "plays" with the pool boys, wrestling them, and they all line up to be flipped by her...

Up until this role, JN hadn't many speaking parts, which makes this role all the more remarkable... By now it was an obvious given she was the most physically astonishing creature in cinema, but here she shows she can act, and act convincingly not only as a Physically Superior Woman, but as a Mentally Superior Woman as well... The 60s were when she started talking the talk in addition to walking the walk... With a cold Nordic logic she's one step ahead of everyone else in the film (play), in her plan to create a new super race that she will be the Mother to... This is the first of her 60s SuperHuman Femmes, followed by Rhoda the Robot and The CatWoman... The James Mason character presents a fantasy dilemma for the married man -- you're getting old, it's harder to get it up, your wife of 16 years isn't as hot as she once was and boom! In walks a Statuesque Swedish Glamazon who says she wants to f**k your brains out... Any resolution to this dilemma besides his utter submission to her is unbelievable, and herein lies the weakness of the movie (play)... The dynamic of the action is him resisting her while the viewer is completely overwhelmed, and no reasonable resolution of the action is possible since the movie from the outset will not allow for him to be adulterous... But it is fun watching her pop his cork...
