1956: The Conqueror
SYLVIA LEWIS
Carried out by her minions...
A Dance Goddess invokes the forces of Sexual Energy...
And beguiles all who behold the Eternal Grace of The Feminine...
Done steaming up the court (and John Wayne as Genghis Khan!)... She is carried away by her minions...
The movie does not explain
exactly where minions carry a Dance Goddess to...
One of the more surprising
discoveries of the Survey is how many "dancers-in-the-court" routines there are
in the early to mid-1950s; just about every ancient court costumer has a moment when a bunch of dancing girls are brought out in various states of undress to
prance about for the amusement of the rulers and their guests... A good many of
them feature laughable choreography, but this one, with the inimitable
Sylvia Lewis, moves towards the profound with her incarnation as a Dance Goddess
not unlike Shiva, who is surrounded by an entourage of beautiful women and
muscle-bound men, celebrating the Divine Embodiment of the Feminine
Form... The costume was designed by Michael Woulfe, who also did the
notorious costumes of Son of Sinbad and Jane Russell in The French
Line...
Ms. Lewis writes: " As a matter of fact, my dance, partially due to the costume, was edited out of the film in several states in the country. I really was banned in Boston. Ludicrous by today's standards, yes?"
And of course, an array of unknown beauties fill the court as well...
