1954: Deep in My Heart

JULIE NEWMAR

Very early in her career Julie Newmar was seen as a flashpoint for perversion in musicals. Her size and grace obviously inspired directors / choreographers, and in the context of the movie this number comes out of nowhere, as the movie is a bio-pic about a boring turn-of-the-century composer.  But it's directed by Stanley Donen, one of the grand masters of sexually-charged dance sequences,  who had helped choreograph the ground-breaking Cyd Charisse Femme Fatale dance in Singing in the Rain.   Surrounded by smaller men, JN is a towering vision of Femininity, stunning the men into an abject state of awe. This abject state of  men would continue for years...

The 2 sexiest dancers of the era, Ann Miller and Cyd Charisse, also appear in the movie, and tellingly, they are tame compared to the heat the JN generates...
