Very early in her career Julie Newmar was seen as a flashpoint for perversion in musicals. Her size and grace obviously inspired directors / choreographers, and in the context of the movie this number comes out of nowhere, as the movie is a bio-pic about a boring turn-of-the-century composer. But it's directed by Stanley Donen, one of the grand masters of sexually-charged dance sequences, who had helped choreograph the ground-breaking Cyd Charisse Femme Fatale dance in Singing in the Rain.
