1953: How To Marry A Millionaire
|
MARILYN MONROE as "Pola
Debevoise" |
It's a pretty safe bet that most men in the early 1950s would have done anything to be a foot stool at this congress of Female Energy -- Betty Grable, Lauren Bacall and Marilyn Monroe just lounging around, kicking off their heels. But what promised to be a Fantasia of Femininity falls a little flat, due somewhat to Betty and Lauren moving on in years and not-quite believable as fashion models...
MM, of course, does not
disappoint, as once again she is decked in an array of fetishistic fashions as
in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, but unlike
Blondes, MM's character
doesn't have the nasty man-eater focus, and her blindness inherently weakens
her, so instead of dominating men, she's dependent on them... Over-all that's
the problem of the movie -- the women seem a bit too desperate for a man to
marry them, and in the world of WOmWAm, it's recognized as a truth that it is
always the man who should be in a position of desperation...
Come
on, admit it, you want to be the foot-stool here..
